IGCP572 Field Excursion: "Anatomy of an Anachronistic Carbonate Platform: The Lower Triassic of the SW US", May 25-26, 2010

Starting January 12, 2010 - Ending April 12, 2010

Call for participation

Project members Adam Woods and David Bottjer are organizing a field trip and related theme session for the 2010 meeting of the Cordilleran section of the Geological Society of America in Anaheim, California, in May 25-26, 2010. The field excursion is entitled: “Anatomy of an Anachronistic Carbonate Platform: The Lower Triassic of the southwestern United States and its Relationship to the Recovery from the Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction.” The field trip will provide attendees with a complete picture of carbonate environments and associated anachronistic facies following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, ranging from deep, outer shelf environments to shallow subtidal environments. Sites that will be visited include the deep water facies of the Union Wash Formation at Darwin, California, in order to examine seafloor calcium carbonate precipitates; shallow water stromatolites from the Union Wash Formation at Cerro Gordo, California; and middle shelf facies and corresponding reefal stromatolites and anachronistic facies from the Virgin Limestone at Lost Cabin Springs, Nevada. The theme session is entitled: “The Triassic Aftermath and Recovery from the End-Permian Mass Extinction”, and will focus on the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic mass extinction and its impact on Triassic biotic trends. The 2010 meeting of the Cordilleran section of the GSA will be held in May 27-29, 2010. The deadline for submissions to the meeting is March 9, 2010. If you are interested in the SW US field excursion, please contact Dr. Adam Woods [awoods@Exchange.FULLERTON.EDU] for more info.
